The day before the Oscars in February, it’s the stuff you don’t see on TV. The marginalized are truly pushed aside when Hollywood Boulevard is split in two by a big red carpet and fencing. Almost claustrophobic.
I couldn’t decide between the Green Day song and this version of the old standard by Diana Krall so you have both. Enjoy.
Onto the contest.
Starting today and ending April 30th, you have a chance to win an unframed print of your choice (16×20″, 12×24″ or 24×24″).
Entering is (relatively) easy, here’s what you have to do:

- Answer these two questions:
- When you enlarge the photo above, Who’s name is in the star in the foreground? If you’re having trouble reading the name, click here.
- What or who does he have in common with the guy at right?
They both have stars on the HWOF is NOT a correct answer even though it is a fact.
- Post your answer as a comment here.
- Select your favorite image from this site and post a comment under that image about why you want to own it, hang it on your wall etc. Doesn’t have to be long and detailed, something more than “because I do” and something less than “War and Peace” is just fine. And it’s also OK if you win and decide you want something else, so don’t stress too much, this is supposed to be fun.
That’s all there is to it, simple, right?
The last contest I ran, ended with Robin selecting this image and Bo, choosing this image to hang on their respective walls. I think they’re happy with them but you might want to ask them .
So, here’s the fine print. On May 1st, 2009, I’ll be selecting 3 people at random out of all of the correct entries. Those three lucky people will then have to submit to a drug screening and provide proof of insurance. be very happy.
And finally, if the USPS can get it to you (pretty much anywhere in the world), you’re welcome to enter. Any questions?
Good Luck!!

What they have in common: Both have never visited my house.
Seriously: Selleck and Dieterle are very close to each other on the HWOF. I believe Godzilla’s star is between them. Maybe I read that wrong and they are next to each other.
I am very, very happy with my print, Captain. Extremely happy, in fact.
I show it off every chance I get.
donno if comment went through.
Found two possible connections- both Tom Selleck and William Dieterle collaborated with Victor Stolloff on film projects. Selleck in ‘The Washington Affair’ and Dieterle for ‘This is Dynamite’.
They are also both heterosexual men who have played openly gay roles… Selleck opposite Kevin Kline in ‘IN and Out’ (i love that one, the dancing scene!) and Dieterle in the provocatively titled ‘Sex in Chains’ where his character enters into a relationship with a prison-mate, apparently cus of the strain and frustration of incarceration.
Hi Ron,
VERY nice site. smooth, professional and elegant. Love the way you did your name/logo at the top. Maybe it was always like that but I really notice it now with the new look. You have a great sense of design and color.
William Dieterle (German) was an actor, director, movie maker. The only thing I can think of that they have in common is that Dieterle had a penchant for “whodunits”, murder mysteries, police work, robberies, etc. And Tom Selleck was a PI, Thomas Magnum in Magnum, P.I and was always solving mysteries of the same nature. And the the thing they have most is common is that they are both MEN!! LOL!! Okay, I couldn’t resist.
Thanks Ron, this was a fun break!!
Robin
Ok…what Tom Selleck and William Dieterle have in common? The were both born in a J month…they both have stars on the walk of fame…separated by Godzilla…they are both actors…both men…they both worked with Victor Stolloff. Selleck in ‘The Washington Affair’ and Dieterle for ‘This is Dynamite’.
They both worked on movies with the word “Affair”…Tom Selleck in the Washington Affair, and William Dieterle in September Affair.
Not sure what else they could possibly have in common. I googled all sorts of ways and came up with nothing….
Trish
Great idea for a contest! I’m afraid I know nothing about William Dieterle – and the only Tom Selleck movie I can remember seeing is Mr. Baseball. They’ve both been in a bunch of movies I’ve never seen? Hehe – cool B&W image though!
Ha ha Stevo. Good answer. I certainly wouldn’t mind a visit from Tom.
The name on the star is William Dieterle.
Tom Selleck starred in The Washington Affair, while William Dieterle starred in The September Affair. Both men are connected through movie titles.
Both men also have Western movies in common. William Dieterle starred in a Western movie called Duel in the Sun 1946, while Tom Selleck stared in Quigley Down Under. Actually, Selleck has starred in several Westerns, but this is the one I remember the best.
Both of their “stars” are next to Godzilla.
That’s not fair I want a question about Godzilla Ron !!!
From the Lizard King – Los Angeles Times…”…Godzilla is an A-lister. His pink-and-gray terrazzo star, a few steps east of Grauman’s Chinese Theater, is flanked by that of Tom Selleck–another large reptilian star–and the great German director William Dieterle..” This is a very challenging question for an Australian Ron! I couldn’t rely on first hand experience – I had to undertake intensive research
Ok Ron…. I will enter, but seriously I know nothing of Tom Selleck and William Dieterle
William Dieterle is the name on the star in the foreground
Both Tom Selleck and William Dieterle are male (I warned you that I did not know anything about these two) – They both have been in movies – they both have dark hair and dark eyes, they both have appeared here on your blog, in this contest.
Off to make my image selection now….
Love your website Ron, and your photography is an inspiration to all that see it. I will still be your friend even if I don’t win this contest, LOL
They both are involved in this contest.
William Dieterle is the name on the star.
Both William Dieterle and Tom Selleck are famous for wearing hats. Dieterle wore a large hat on set, and Tom Selleck was often wearing his Detroit Tigers baseball cap.
I like Amuirin’s answer. So here goes:
1. The name on the star in the photo above is William Dieterle.
2. Both Tom Selleck and William Dieterle have worked as actors, producers, and writers in the film industry. Both Tom and William’s stars are neighbors of Godzilla’s star. Both actors are known for playing handsome, debonair, and humorous roles (and as Amuirin pointed out, they both have had a role playing a gay man and both men had professional connections to Victor Stoloff.
3. As for my favorite of your photos, that’s the toughest part of this contest because I love about 99.9% of your photos but I will run off and try to choose one.
Thanks Ron for the reminder message. When I checked in a couple of weeks ago it appeared your contest questions had been answered and so didn’t bother entering.
So, I’ll just suck up and tell you that I really like the re-design – it’s clean, crisp & very professional looking. If I were to be fortunate enough to wind up with one of your prints I’d opt for this one in ‘Portfolios’ > ‘Bolivia’ > ‘palacio_salar_029′. It is one beautiful gem among many!
Let the judging begin…… have fun!!
Hey Ron! There’s one I can’t find to comment on. I think you called it “last call” or something like that…with the booze bottles lined up behind the bar. Know the one? I can’t find it. Oh well, I suppose I could leave a comment on every one of the ones I would love to “wallpaper” my house in…yeah, there’s that many!
I didn’t enter because I thought I should let someone else win.
(It had nothing to do with the fact that I don’t know the answers.)
All good things must come to an end, including this contest. I’m assuming it was good…
Thanks to everybody for entering and for all the great answers.
The winners will be announced in the Weekly Bzzzzz this Sunday.
