Five Crosses

Five Crosses - Tupiza, Bolivia

Click a Cross for a larger version. The music is here.

Just outside of the town of Tupiza on the road to Villazon stands this church. It’s a very, very narrow structure and almost appears to be something I’m used to seeing on a studio back lot up the road from where I live. As you might have figured out from the title of this post, what interested me was the fact that there were five Crosses adorning this tiny building.

So I started wondering why a church, which couldn’t possibly hold more than 20 people, 30 if you’re being generous, needed that many Crosses on the outside alone. I wasn’t able to go inside but would guess that there were quite a few more than five Crosses inside. I have a few theories, nothing that I would classify as slam-dunk correct but theories that could hold water.

So, as you listen to the music my question to you would be, does the number of Crosses or more specifically, the ratio of Crosses to Parishoners matter? And if so, why?
Just for the record, I’d ask the same question if this were a Synagouge, Mosque or other House of Worship.

Now you’ve got me wondering about that church. I’ve been searching to see if I can find any info online. So far, no go. But I’m stubborn so I’ll keep at it.

I love the picture, too. The sky so intensely blue and the church sitting there as if it were a toy placed on the rugged terrain.

Hmmm…well… there are the five elements (earth, air, fire, water, and spirit) and/or the five states of matter (earth, air, fire, water, ether or light), but I doubt that’s it. Some orthodox Christian religions believe the number 5 symbolizes the Holy Spirit. I’m guessing that last one is as close as I’ll get, heathen that I am.

I doubt it has anything to do with Discordianism’s Law of Fives (“all things happen in fives,” followed by “The Law of Fives is never wrong”), but just thought I’d throw that out there for entertainment purposes.

Looks like a cardboard cutout! Love the contrast between the beautiful blue sky and the stained building.
