The road between Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead is a lot of fun to drive. Interchangeably referred to as CA 18 and “Rim of the World Highway”, it runs through the San Bernardino National Forest. According to the US Forest Service:
Rim of the World Scenic Byway: This 110-mile route traverses the rim of the San Bernardino Mountains from Cajon Pass to San Gorgonio Pass. Built in 1915 at 101 miles long, the road boasted over 2,000 automobiles in 1916 alone. The road originally passed through Green Valley as it made it’s way to Big Bear and back down Clark’s Grade into the Santa Ana River Canyon, taking over 8 hours to make the round trip.
I couldn’t possibly name this post “Vanishing Point” without mentioning one of the greatest car chase/road movies ever made, the original 1971 Vanishing Point
a cult classic in the truest sense of the word. From the box:
Thrills, spills and a handful of pills. It all adds up to one of the most spectacular car chases in motion picture history! Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, the last American hero, who set out to prove that he can drive from Denver to San Francisco in just fifteen hours. Along the way, he meets an old prospector (Dean Jagger), a snake worshipper, a nude woman on a motorcycle, and a blind D.J. (Cleavon Little) who “sees” danger ahead in this super-charged, action-packed adventure!
It’s about as simple a formula that you can possibly have: a guy, a fast car, good music and beautiful scenery. It’s why this movie still endures today.

I might have to see if Netflix has that movie. It’s been years since I last saw it.
I like the perspective on this photo. Nice.
I love the yellow stripes in the middle of the road…then again my favorite color is yellow! No, I think it’s because the stripes are leading the eye to the mountains in the background. I know this road. I’ve driven it a number of times but I never got the courage to enjoy the view while driving the curves of the road.
Vanishing Point is an excellent movie. I remember going to see it at the theater when it came out. My sisters and I went to see it. I’ll have to look for it on Netflix.
As suggested in the previous comment, it’s the perspective and compostion that make this such an interesting image. It’s a temptation to travel, too!
Thanks Andrew, it’s the leading lines…
