Hummingbirds tease me all the time. I have some sort of mental block when I try to shoot them so I was happy when I sort of got this. Just above the treetops, from about 40 feet away.
I'm in the process of overhauling the site. If it doesn't look right in your browser, please let me know. Thanks, Ron. ;)

Sort of got it?!? Looks like you got it to me.
Great job, Ron. Hummingbirds are big teases, and so fast that I rarely attempt to photograph one.
Nice music. It goes well with the slow snow fall we’re having here in the Bogs. Warmed me up, it did. Thanks.
yeah, that’s an amazing capture, as fast as they move. It sure doesn’t look like it’s 40 feet away!
I love this shot. The few times I’ve managed to see a hummingbird in my yard, it has seen me as well and taken off before I could even think to grab a camera. Your blog is great. Still working on the watercolor, will send a copy if I ever get it done.
Trish
Great shot Ron, thats like a 40 ft jump shot at the buzzer, what ISO did you have that cranked up to?
Thanks Robin, A.
Wecome Trish and thanks. Yeah, looking forward to seeing it if it ever gets done.
Thanks Bernie, being from Indiana, I was wondering when a bball analogy was coming.
The settings were, 400 mm, f8 @ 1/3200s ISO 400 and a couple of glasses of Pinot Noir (since you asked.)
Normally when I point my camera at a hummingbird my coordination is a cross between Kramer entering Jerry’s apartment and Elaine dancing…
i have two hummingbird pictures hanging over my guest room bed that was given to me as a gift from a professional photographer, some how their flapping flurry, caught with a still, makes the bed area very peaceful, guests comment on their sleep in that bed too, i think it is the two hummingbird pictures that look over the bed
Amazing photo, you have a very well designed site here too. I am new here and hope to meet friends from all over.
Have a great weekend from
Kimzy
Nice photo! I’m able to get good shots like this on a pretty consistent basis. See my website for examples, and some tips on how it’s done. I intend to update my website with more tips on this subject in the near future. Keep trying, and get closer. Prefocus on a spot just behind the bird feeder. The bird will feed, retreat a few inches, feed again, etc. If you get them at the “hovering spot” just inches from the feeder, you can consistently get shots of them without the ugly feeder.
Hey fish, welcome back.
Thanks and welcome Kimzy, Greg.
great shot, and whoa.. 40 feet away!
