In January, I took Spenser to see Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band at the T.D. Waterhouse Amway Arena in Orlando.
Bob sounded great. The Silver Bullet Band? Kicked Ass…
Spenser hated it, it was too loud (I really wonder sometimes.)
All I could think about was how old the crowd was. I grew up on Seger, I love Seger, Night Moves is one helluva song/album (catch it on the soundtrack to American Pop, an animated film by Ralph Bakshi, better yet, watch the film) as is Live Bullet.
Some quick thoughts about the experience:
1) I know people wanted to rush the stage, it was amusing to see them try to get their walkers to cooperate.
2) It was the first time I ever heard anyone ask for a Metemucil Martini.
3) I didn’t know about the buy one, get one free with your AARP card.
Anyway, the following song kind of describes part of the year and explains the crowd
…
So here I am with Spenser, in San Diego. Just back from Bolivia a week ago, thinking about the year that was (I know there’s a week left…but I’ve had better years, lopping a week off, oh well.) and thought I’d share my day at Legoland, Bolivia California with you. Self indulgence is one mighty…
The beginning…

Rides…

More Rides…

The Tool Every Parent Needs…

Yes, it’s a mixmaster for kids…
This I kind of like, captured it while waiting to get sprayed by Spenser from a boat at Pirate Shores…

Going Fast, sort of, not really…

Which kind of brings me back to Seger…
He still Rocks, still Rolls, not just as fast…which is a good description of Legoland even by Spenser’s definition.
Spenser is 10.5.
As we were leaving, I said to him “the next time you’ll be here, it’ll be with your child” (ok, I said son, sue me
)
At that point, I’ll be as old (or spry as Bob Seger) I’ll still think I can rock ‘n roll and kick ass, I’ll adjust to the Metemucil Martinis…and I’ll still be able to ride the dinocoaster without (my pacemaker) skipping a beat…

I lost my Mom in September.
She’d still be rolling her eyes at me (I’m sure she still is)…but I know she’s awfully proud of Spenser.
It’s just about a new year…
Thanks for indulging my self…
(An early) Happy New Year.

I bet she’s awfully proud of you, too. Even if she is still rolling her eyes at you — especially for those Metemucil Martinis (and since I’m old and gray and not far from needing a walker, how do you make one of those things??).
I like all of the photos, mostly cos I think they were taken with a lot of love. And they’re just plain cool.
I think I’ll go to Legoland next time I’m in San Diego (which will be in April). Do they let us old folks in?
Since it is almost the new year (and I tend to think of the solstice as the turning of a new year anyhow):
Happy New Year, Ron. I hope this turning of the page brings you into an amazing chapter of life.
I think I could really use one of those Metemucil Martinis about now!
Love the pictures Ron, expecially the ones of the mixmaster for kids… and I am with Robin, I bet your mom is awfully proud of you, and I’m willing to bet she is still rolling her eyes at you.
Hug that little boy tight Ron – tomorrow he will be all grown up.
A couple of years ago, I wrote in my old blog, about a concert experience I had.
I think we had similar thoughts! ((not sure the link above will work, so if it doesn’t feel free to delete this comment)
I love Bob Seger and the last video above happens to be one of my favorite songs.
Thanks guys, appreciate the comments.
Truddle, Nazereth!?!? When I was younger my friends and I all signed up for the Columbia Record Club numerous times and Hair of the Dog was one of the most traded cassettes between us.
Yup Nazereth Ron! But boy they sure look different now than they did back then!
Great post Ron. A great year in review article. Fun images.
